Focal Species Models
The focal species products represent the output of our focal species assessment (see Species document for details). For each species we include several different products for the present (2020) and future (2040, and 2080) conditions. The future products incoporate projected climate and/or urban growth without additional land protection. The species models use versions of the DSLland raster that contains a finer thematic resolution, in which some ecosystems are further classified into subsystems and in which headwater creeks may not be included; see DSL_subsysland in ancillary data products.
All species have been updated using version 5 landcover (March 2020) for the current timestep (2020) and projected climate for 2040 and 2080 and as of Sept 2022 projected urban growth.
Version 5.1 (February and September 2022): For each species we now include 3 packages containing data for species at different points in time. The 2020 package represents our “current” condition, while 2040 and 2080 include projected habitat (due to urban growth) , and/or climate change and sea level rise. In September 2022 we added the datasets that depended on the SPRAWL model which predicts development in the region and broke the species packages up by decade, but did not change any of the version 5.1 datasets previous released in February 2022.
2020 (current condition) datasets
- Landscape Capability species_LC_2020_5.1.tif the ability of the current (2020) landscape and climate to support the species.
- Climate Niche species_CN_2020_5.1.tif a continuous climate suitability surfaces for the species based on 2020 climate.
2040 (projected) datasets
- Landscape Capability species_LC_2040_5.1.tif the ability of the 2040 landscape and climate to support the species.
- Habitat Response species_HR_2040_5.1.tif the ability of the 2040 landscape and the 2020 climate to support the species. This is the effect of habitat loss (through development) on the species independent of climate change.
- Climate Response species_CR_2040_5.1.tif the ability of the 2020 landcover coupled with the 2040 climate to support the species. This is the effect of climate change on the species in the absence of landcover change (development) under the assumption that the species tracks its climate niche.
- Climate Refugia species_Crefugia_2040_5.1.tif This is climate response but with areas where the 2020 climate is not suitable zeroed out. For many species it is very similar or even identical to Climate Response.
- Climate Niche species_CN_2040_5.1.tif a continuous climate suitability surface for the species based on 2040 climate.
- Climate Zone (CZ): species_CZ_2040_5.1.shp the change in climate suitability between the current condition (2020) and 2040 classified into zones, represented as polygons. The zones are: “contraction”, the climate is suitable in 2020 but not in the 2040; “persistence”, the climate is suitable in 2020 and the 2040; and “expansion”, the climate is not suitable in 2020 but is in the 2040.
2080 (projected) datasets
- Landscape Capability species_LC_2080_5.1.tif the ability of the 2040 landscape and climate to support the species.
- Habitat Response species_HR_2080_5.1.tif the ability of the 2080 landscape and the 2020 climate to support the species. This is the effect of habitat loss (through development) on the species independent of climate change.
- Climate Response species_CR_2080_5.1.tif the ability of the 2020 landcover coupled with the 2080 climate to support the species. This respresents the effect of climate change on the species in the absence of landcover change (development) under the assumption that the species tracks its climate niche.
- Climate Refugia species_Crefugia_2080_5.1.tif This is climate response but with areas where the 2020 climate is not suitable zeroed out. For many species it is very similar or even identical to Climate Response.
- Climate Niche species_CN_2080_5.1.tif a continuous climate suitability surface for the species based on 2040 climate.
- Climate Zone (CZ): species_CZ_2080_5.1.shp the change in climate suitability between the current condition (2020) and 2080 classified into zones, represented as polygons. The zones are: “contraction”, the climate is suitable in 2020 but not in the 2080; “persistence”, the climate is suitable in 2020 and the 2080; and “expansion”, the climate is not suitable in 2020 but is in the 2080.
Note: as of September 22, 2022 we are in transition from older datasets so please have patience if the three (2020, 2040, and 2080) packages aren’t yet posted for a given species.
