Focal Species Models
All species have been updated using version 5 data (March 2020) for the current timestep (2020) and projected climate for 2040 and 2080 (but not projected urban growth). Results from the previous version (v. 3) include future runs for 2080 that incorporate both climate change and urban growth. Documentation is the same for both versions, as only underlying data have changed. If you need projections that include urban growth, use v. 3 otherwise use v 5.1.
Version 5.1 (February 2022): The focal species products represent the output of our focal species assessment (see Species document for details). For each species we include five raster products that represent the ability of the landscape to support the species under different conditions:
Landscape Capability (LC) species_LC_2020_5.1.tif Is the ability of the current (2020) landscape and climate to support the species.
Climate Response (CR) species_CR_2040_5.1.tif and species_CR_2080_5.1.tif The landscape capability for the species given 2020 landcover and either 2040 climate or 2080 climate under the assumption that the species tracks its climate niche.
Climate Refugia (CRefugia): species_Crefugia_2040_5.1.tif and species_Crefugia_2080_5.1.tif This is climate response but with areas where the 2020 climate is not suitable zeroed out. For many species it is very similar or even identical to Climate Response.
Five additional products represent climate suitability (these do not incorporate landcover-derived habitat capability):
Climate Niche (CN): species_CN_2020_5.1.tif, species_CN_2040_5.1.tif, and species_CN_2080_5.1.tif are continuous climate suitability surfaces for the species based on 2020, 2040, and 2080 climate.
Climate Zone (CZ): species_CZ_2040_5.1.shp, and species_CZ_2080_5.1.shp Represent the change in climate
suitability between the current condition (2020) and the future (either 2040 or 2080) classified into zones, represented as polygons. The zones are: “contraction”, the climate is suitable in 2020 but not in the future (2040 or 2080); “persistence”, the climate is suitable in 2020 and the future; and “expansion”, the climate is not suitable in 2020 but is in the future.
Version 3 (October 2018): The focal species products represent the output of our focal species assessment (see Species document for details). For each species we include several different products, including the 2010 climate niche index (speciesCN2010), 2010 composite landscape capability index (speciesLC2010), 2080 climate niche index (speciesCN2080), 2080 composite landscape capability index (speciesLC2080), 2080 climate response index (speciesCR2080), 2080 climate zones shapefile (speciesCZ2080), 2080 habitat response index (speciesHR2080), and 2080 climate refugia index (speciesCRefugia2080). All 2080 products are for a baseline 70-year (2010-2080) climate change and urban growth scenario without additional land protection. Note, the species models use a version of the DSLland raster (DSL_subsysland, see ancillary products) that contains a finer thematic resolution, in which some ecosystems are further classified into subsystems, and in which headwater creeks are not included.
